Holding space and creating safe spaces for children, youth and adults is critical in building trust and relationships.
Using a trauma-and violence-informed approach is necessary when responding to the complex needs of individuals and communities affected by trauma. Focus on creating safe, supportive environments that promote health and resilience.
A trauma- and violence-informed lens can have a positive impact and prevent further harm. Understanding the words we use and the impact of those words – disrespectful or shaming – can reduce re-traumatization.

Offer support in your actions/programs or services that:
- Uphold safety
- Ensure trustworthiness and transparency
- Offer peer support
- Work collaboratively to find mutually beneficial plans
- Empower, listen to individual voices and choice
- Consider cultural, historical and gender issues*
